New Speaker flags human rights focus

Mandalay witnessed a distinct changing of guard on 8 February as its new hluttaw took office, with the newly appointed Speaker stressing the importance of being accountable to the public. He added that human rights and economic and social development will be priorities, and promised to annul outdated laws.

National League for Democracy MP for Mandalay Region U Aung Kyaw Oo, representing the constituency of Patheingyi 1, was elected as Speaker unopposed on the proposal of Maha Aung Myay township MP U Ye Min Oo, also of the NLD. The proposal was seconded by U Zaw Zaw Aung, the NLD MP for Patheingyi 2.
